Is There a Government Rego Check API in Australia?
Short answer: no. No Australian state or territory offers an open, self-serve API for looking up a vehicle from its plate. The free rego checks are web forms built for people, and the national systems that do have machine interfaces are either restricted to approved organisations or answer a different question. Here is what exists, what each one is for, and what developers use instead.
The state rego checks are web forms
Every state and territory runs a free online rego check (the official link for each is in our state-by-state guide). Each is designed for one person checking one vehicle: you type a plate into a form and read the result on screen. None of them publishes an API, developer documentation or API keys.
Is there a VicRoads API?
VicRoads runs a Transport Open Data API, which is usually what comes up when you search for one. It serves transport datasets as map layers (the WMS and WFS formats), and you request a token by email. It has no registration or plate lookup. Victorian rego checks are only available through the Service Victoria web form.
Is there a Service NSW API?
The NSW Government publishes APIs through API.NSW, and Transport for NSW runs an Open Data Hub for public transport and traffic data. The product with the most promising name, the Motor API, is NSW Fair Trading's register of motor dealer and repairer licences: it tells you whether a dealer or mechanic is licensed, not what a vehicle is. There is no self-serve rego lookup API in NSW.
What about NEVDIS?
NEVDIS, the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System, has been run by Austroads since 1998 on behalf of the state and territory road agencies. It links their registration records into one national view, mainly so road agencies can work across borders, and it also supports industries such as insurance. Commercial access is through approved information brokers under formal agreements rather than a sign-up page, so it is not something you can start calling from a new app this afternoon.
Heavy vehicles: the NHVR API
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has a developer platform with a vehicle registration search API. You need an approved API user and a subscription key, and it covers heavy vehicles only: not cars, light commercials or motorcycles.
PPSR: finance owing and write-offs, by VIN
The Personal Property Securities Register shows whether a vehicle has money owing on it or has been recorded as written off or stolen. For high-volume users it has a business-to-government (B2G) channel: a SOAP web service that you apply for, with your server IP addresses registered in advance and a fee on each search. It answers "is this car encumbered or written off?" from a VIN. It does not answer "what car is this?" from a plate.
Summary
| System | What it gives you | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| State and territory rego checks | Status and expiry for one vehicle in one state | Anyone, by hand in a web form |
| VicRoads Transport Open Data API | Transport map datasets, no plate lookups | Anyone who requests a token |
| API.NSW Motor API | Motor dealer and repairer licences | Registered API.NSW users |
| NEVDIS | National registration records | Approved organisations, through accredited brokers |
| NHVR API | Heavy vehicle registrations | Approved NHVR developer users |
| PPSR B2G | Finance owing, written off, stolen (by VIN) | Approved high-volume users, fee per search |
What developers use instead
If what you need is "plate in, vehicle out" -- to show the right parts, pre-fill a booking form or check a fleet record -- a commercial plate lookup API is the practical route. PlateAPI is one: you sign up, get a key, and call one REST endpoint for all eight states and territories.
curl -s "https://api.plateapi.com.au/api/v1/lookup?plate=ABC123&state=VIC" \ -H "X-API-Key: pk_live_YOUR_API_KEY"
from plateapi import PlateAPI # pip install plateapi
client = PlateAPI("pk_live_YOUR_API_KEY")
result = client.lookup("ABC123", "VIC")
if result.success:
v = result.vehicle
print(v.year_range, v.make, v.model, v.engine, v.vehicle_id)It returns the vehicle's year range, make, model, body, engine and a stable vehicle ID, and on Starter plans and above you also get the make, model and year database for dropdowns. It does not return registration status, expiry dates or owner details. There is a free tier with 20 lookups a month, no card needed, and a free sandbox plate, TEST123, for development. The API reference covers authentication and every endpoint, and the developer guide walks through a first integration.
PlateAPI turns Australian number plates into structured vehicle data -- one REST endpoint, all eight states, free tier included.
