What is a Vehicle Registration API?

A vehicle registration API is a service that takes a registration plate number and returns information about the vehicle -- typically the make, model, year, body type, and engine. You send an HTTP request with the plate, and you get structured data back in JSON. That is the core of it.

If you have ever typed a plate number into a government website and looked at the result, a registration API does the same thing but in a way that software can use: your website, your app, your internal tool, or your automated workflow calls the API, and the vehicle data comes back in a format your code can parse and act on.

Who uses them?

Registration APIs are used by businesses and developers who need vehicle data as part of a process, not as a one-off check:

  • Auto parts stores -- a customer enters their plate, the store identifies the vehicle, and the catalogue filters to compatible parts. This is called "rego search to garage" and it is the standard in Australian auto parts ecommerce.
  • Workshops and mechanics -- booking forms that ask for a plate instead of make/model/year dropdowns. The vehicle is identified before the customer arrives.
  • Fleet managers -- checking vehicle details across a fleet of dozens or hundreds of vehicles without manually looking up each one.
  • Insurance and finance -- verifying vehicle details during quoting or application processes.
  • Dealerships -- quickly identifying trade-in vehicles or checking stock details.
  • Automotive software vendors -- any product that deals with vehicles and needs a reliable way to identify them from a plate number.

How they work

From your perspective as a developer, the integration is simple. You make an HTTP GET request with the plate and state as parameters, and your API key in a header:

shell
curl -s "https://api.plateapi.com.au/api/v1/lookup?plate=ABC123&state=VIC" \
  -H "X-API-Key: pk_live_YOUR_API_KEY"

The response is JSON containing the vehicle data:

200 OK
{
  "success": true,
  "vehicle": {
    "year_range": "2003-2006",
    "lowest_year": 2003,
    "highest_year": 2006,
    "make": "TOYOTA",
    "model": "COROLLA",
    "description": "03~06 TOYOTA COROLLA SPORTIVO 1.8L PETROL",
    "body": "HATCHBACK",
    "engine": "1.8L",
    "vehicle_id": 5152708
  },
  "source": "plateapi",
  "duration_ms": 1874.32,
  "request_id": "req_3d9e1f7a2b6c4e8d0a5f1c2b",
  "alternatives": [],
  "match": "exact"
}

You call it from your backend (never from browser JavaScript -- that would expose your API key), parse the response, and use the vehicle data however your application needs it.

What they do not return

A legitimate vehicle registration API does not return the vehicle owner's name, address, or personal information. That data is protected under Australian privacy law and is not available through any lawful registration check service. What you get is vehicle identification data: what the car is, not who owns it.

Why not just use the free state portals?

Every Australian state has a free rego check website. They are good for checking one car manually, but they are not built for integration:

  • They have no API -- you cannot call them from your code (see is there a government rego check API?).
  • Each state is a separate portal with different data fields and formats.
  • They are designed for occasional manual use, not business-volume lookups.

A registration API solves all three problems: one endpoint, one consistent format, all states, built for software to call.

What to look for when choosing one

If you are evaluating registration API providers for the Australian market, the things that matter are:

  • State coverage. Does it cover all eight states and territories? Some services only cover one or two.
  • Data quality. Does it return the model year range, body type, and engine? Or just a make and model string?
  • Response format. Structured JSON fields you can parse, not a blob of text you have to regex apart.
  • A test mode. Can you test the integration without consuming your paid quota?
  • Pricing transparency. Clear per-month pricing with a free tier to try it, not "contact sales for a quote".

PlateAPI

PlateAPI is a vehicle registration API covering all Australian states and territories. It returns the year range, make, model, body type, engine and a stable vehicle ID for every lookup, in a consistent JSON format. It has a free tier with 20 lookups per month (no credit card), a sandbox test plate for development, and paid plans from $29/month. Try a real plate on the live demo or read the API docs.

PlateAPI turns Australian number plates into structured vehicle data -- one REST endpoint, all eight states, free tier included.
